FIR Full-Form = First Information Report
Fir का फुल फॉर्म प्रथम सूचना रिपोर्ट होता है जिसे इंग्लिश में First Information Report कहते है। यह एक लिखित दस्तावेज है, जो पुलिस विभाग द्वारा मुखबिर के आधार पर तैयार किया गया है, जिसका उपयोग भारत, पाकिस्तान और जापान में किया जाता है। तो यह पहला कदम है, जिसके आधार पर पुलिस अनुसंधान से संबंधित अपराध शुरू कर सकती है।
जब किसी पुलिस अधिकारी को अपराध की सूचना दी जाती है, तो पुलिस अधिकारी सूचना के आधार पर एक रिपोर्ट लिखता है जिसे एफआईआर कहा जाता है। यह एक प्रकार का दस्तावेज है। जिसमें एक पर्ची मुखबिर को दी जाती है और दूसरी पुलिस द्वारा रखी जाती है।
कोई भी व्यक्ति अपराध के बारे में पुलिस को मौखिक या लिखित रूप में सूचित कर सकता है। प्रावधान यह है कि टेलीफोन से प्राप्त जानकारी को एफआईआर के रूप में भी माना जा सकता है
